When it comes to taboo topics of discussion, there is one that rises above the rest - Religion. Considering this conflict, I will be be addressing some fundamental problems concerning religious topics including; faith, the atonement, scriptures, prophets, life/death, heaven/hell, and more depending on the level of interest and questions from any who choose to read. Please, keep in mind that I am not challenging any person, but some consider religion so personal that it may feel like an attack. I love you, not religion.
There are a number of reasons why I’ve decided to take on this controversy.
- I want to unashamedly share my personal feelings so others might understand the true version of me better. In 2017 I was a faithful temple-worthy Mormon member. I started to search for more truth and for a better relationship with God in my studies and prayer. This eventually lead me to be atheist. I wasn’t lazy or wanted to sin, I wanted more than anything for heaven to be true and I was concerned for my soul, but truth prevailed. It has been a difficult transition, but I’m glad to be where I am.
- I want to challenge the seeming double standard that the religious can freely preach their beliefs while the atheists are discouraged from challenging the authorities of faith. Simply for the principle of the situation.
- It really bothers me to see the fence sitters who “believe” in their church, but they don’t entirely commit their lives in accordance to all the doctrine with urgency. If you truly think that the welfare of your eternal soul is dependent on your earthly life, why would you commit anything less than 100% dedication? By all means believe what you will, but don’t half-ass it.
- I’m able to support others’ benign beliefs, but I do struggle to stand back and watch family and friends commit their time, energy, money, and lives to a belief not based on any observable evidence.
As a fair warning the following articles will likely contain information that could be interpreted as offensive or challenging to your current religious views. I mean only to invite friendly discussion, so please refrain from short sighted arguments. If you don’t care to question your personal theology, by all means, stay uninformed. For those interested in the discussion, let’s try to be aware of our personal confirmation bias. Also, there is a tendency to not accept fault because of identity protective cognition (briefly explained in the following video).
