The angel of death, the grim reaper, reincarnation. I know there are a number of different versions of the afterlife, but in most stories there is typically a reward and a lesser-reward or punishment. A good and a bad. Heaven or hell. We are all eventually judged fairly based on our performance on earth and whether or not we had enough faith in the one correct god. After judgement, we are placed in a world of reward or punishment for ETERNITY and FOREVER! In no version of the definition of “justice” does the consequence match the action of a short lifetime.
Imagine a 5-year old boy who gets life in prison with no probation for stealing a stick of gum. Or little Susie who gets an all access pass to Disney World for as long as she lives just because she told the truth one time. However long we may live in this short mortal life, it doesn’t compare justly to an eternity of immortality. Even if you were bad/good your entire life of 107 years, why should the consequence be eternal? Sure, give Hitler a few trillion year in hell, but if he does well during a performance review let him out on probation for a while. And in the opposite, if Gandhi is promoted to VIP heaven, he should be periodically reviewed to make sure he doesn’t get lazy or wicked. What fair company would promote an employee to CEO status and not keep a close watch. I know of no scriptures that say anything like “And behold, in the afterlife ye shall continue to be judged accordingly to the true intent of your heart and ye shall be rewarded the appropriate consequence.” - St. Fake 4:17
I do recall scriptures that generally say you’ve only got one chance to get it right and then you’re stuck for eternity and there is nothing you can do about it. I understand that some believe Jesus atoned for our sins and we can be forgiven and in the “spirit world” we’ll have yet again another chance to accept the true gospel before final judgment… but then you are still stuck in unreviewed eternity. But maybe people don’t change once their in the pearly gates? Unlikely.
The second point I’d like to address is that an eternity of anything will eventually be boring and maybe even a prison of damnation in a way. I’m told that heaven will be amazing and beyond all description and better than what the greatest imagination could ever think of, but I can’t help to be a little skeptical that things will become a bit redundant after sometime. Sure, maybe things are still fun after a few quadrillion lifetimes, but maybe after a centillion millennia things will get less exciting. Even if something new comes about and the bar is raised to a new level of awesomeness, that too will become boring given enough time. And since the afterlife is for eternity, there is no shortage of time. But I suppose my logic can be apologize by saying “there are no limits to the infinite expanse of awesomeness and heaven will continue to be better and better forever and ever”. Under these claims I would add my assertion that God is NOT omniscient or omnipotent because there would be no room for improvement and he would be damned. A damned-god; that’s an oxymoron.
Lastly, I will mention that this eternal sentencing is based on the judgment of our actions here in life. However, people cannot be held accountable to a set of expectations that are not clearly explained. God has not clearly explained his rules and that is why we see numerous contradicting religions that “know” what god wants them to do. A supposed god has assigned us a test with no clear instructions, ambiguous questions, and incomplete multiple-choice answers. So, I’ll just doodle in the margins and try to be a good little boy.
